PHY111 Our Evolving Universe Non-mathematical introduction to astronomy:
  • how astronomers determine stellar properties;
  • the lives and deaths of stars;
  • galaxies and cosmology;
  • planets and life.
PHY306 Introduction to Cosmology The structure, history and fate of our universe:
  • historical instroduction;
  • the Robertson-Walker metric and Friedman-Lemaître models;
  • observational cosmology from Friedman to Freedman;
  • case studies in modern cosmology: H0, Λ, structure formation, the CMB.
PHY327 History of Astronomy An introduction to the history of astronomy:
  • astronomy as a science;
  • theory and practice of planetary astronomy from antiquity to Newton;
  • the development of modern astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology.
PHY340/350 Professional Skills
(Course on MOLE)
Professional skills for physicists and astronomers:
  • effective group-working;
  • retrieving information from the research literature;
  • data analysis and presentation using Python.
PHY418 Particle Astrophysics High energy particle astrophysics:
  • an overview of the field of particle astrophysics;
  • cosmic rays, non-thermal radio emission, X-ray and γ-ray astronomy, astrophysical neutrinos;
  • mechanisms for accelerating particles in astrophysical objects;
  • case studies of astrophysical accelerators: supernova remnants, γ-ray bursts and active galaxies.

graduate teaching

I also teach the following short courses as part of the Particle Physics and Particle Astrophysics group Research Training Programme:

Neutrino Physics
Neutrinos beyond the Standard Model: the neutrino mass and mixing matrices, neutrino oscillations. Experimental status of neutrino mass measurements. Experimental status of neutrino oscillation measurements.
Particle Astrophysics
A much shorter version of PHY418, also including a lecture on dark matter.
Multiwavelength Astronomy
Short course given at the PPARC International Summer School in 2006 and 2007.
