Research

I am working in the field of particle astrophysics. My research interests are related to the non-baryonic dark matter search, neutrino physics and astrophysics and cosmic rays.

I am participating in large international experiments:

·           LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ): dark matter search at Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF, SD, USA) (running) – simulations and background studies

o   Sheffield-PI, Chair of the LZ-UK Institute Board, 2014-2017

o   Chair of the LZ Institute Board, 2018-2019.

·           XLZD: future generation 3 dark matter experiment (design) – simulations and background studies.

·           DUNE (Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment): long-baseline neutrino experiment to search for CP violation in neutrino sector, various phenomena beyond the Standard Model and astrophysical neutrinos (under construction)  – PCB production for anode plane assemblies and far detector calibration using cosmic-ray muons

o   Co-convener of various physics working groups.

·           SBN (Short-Baseline Neutrino programme) and SBND (Short-Baseline Near Detector) at Fermilab (Il, USA): search for sterile neutrinos and measurements of neutrino cross-sections with argon (under construction).

·           EDELWEISS: dark matter experiment at Modane laboratory (France) – 2010-2015.

·           Dark matter searches with NAIAD, ZEPLIN, DRIFT (1997-2010) at Boulby mine (UK) – simulations and data analysis from dark matter detectors at Boulby (1997-2010).

I have been involved in various background measurements and simulations, such as gamma-ray and neutrons from environment, muon-induced neutrons. I am maintaining data libraries for the SOURCES4 code to calculate neutron yields and spectra from (a,n) reactions.

I have written and am maintaining the codes for muon simulations: MUSIC and MUSUN.

I am also involved in a variety of projects linked to cosmic rays in environment and security, such as muon tomography for carbon capture monitoring and using cosmic rays in security applications.

Muon simulation codes: MUSIC and MUSUN

I am one of the authors of the three-dimensional MUon SImulation Code (MUSIC) designed to propagate muons through large thickness of material. It is maintained and regularly updated by me. It is available on request to v.kudryavtsev@sheffield.ac.uk

There is another code MUSUN (MUon Simulation UNderground) closely related to MUSIC. This package allows simulation of single muons underground/underwater at different locations (laboratories) according to their spectra and angular distributions. The package is available on request to v.kudryavtsev@sheffield.ac.uk
